Better staying in one of the mainstream(but supporting)hotels.
All the vast hotels are very much ok with gay folks IMO(some more than others-but that is clientele based rather than policy based)For example the Marriott Marquis is the preferred hotel for the Folsom Lane Fair this year-you really cannot get an odder match than that!
Hi BondiFlyer - I survive between Castro and downtown - and have been here 22 years. By far the best hotel stuff is downtown. I personally find the Castro, while historically important, to be a downtrodden, soiled mess most of the time. The Mission is where are the invigorating stuff is happening these day
