What does Chaz Bono train us about transgender folks?
Q: I’ve been reading all these stories about Chaz, previously Chastity, Bono’s adjust of gender identity, and I see that Wikipedia already says Cher has “a son … who was born female.” Even as a gay person, I’m a bit confusedespecially about what’s the right pronoun to use with a transgender friend. I have a colleague at work, Michael, who is now transitioning to Michelle, and we don’t grasp what to call him (or is it her?).
A: Indeed, Chaz Bono has put the public spotlight on transgender issues in much the same way he did earlier, when he came out as a lesbian. Pause. Yes, that reads a bit awkwardly, especially the expression, “When he came out as a lesbian.” For many people, and especially those who grew up in a time or place where trans people were completely invisible, the concept of changing genders can be confusing. Actually, it’s more unfamiliar than it is confusing.
I ponder back to my parents’ generation, especially how it had trouble accepting lgbtq+ and lesbian family members and friends. Why? I’d say largely because of the shock of the new (“We don’t realize any gay people!”) plus the human family’s basic, almost genetic
As radical right-winger Gary Longstreet on last year's "American Horror Story: Cult," a far cry from his own liberal leanings, Chaz Bono had his breakout role at the age of Why did it take so long for Bono, who just happens to be Cher's gender diverse son, to make his mark as an actor?
Because Bono was often in conflict with the female gender of the person he was playing but didn't know why.
At least not at first.
Then, suddenly, his interest in male roles changed more than just his acting career – in , the activist transitioned from female to male. Years later, in , Bono followed a recurring role as Reverend Rydale on "The Bold and the Beautiful" with a foray into Ryan Murphy's "American Horror Story" anthology, first on "Roanoke" and then on the prolific TV creator's grisly Trump-era "Cult."
Here, Bono opens up about why understanding his gender identity was the long first step to acting again, the "bizarre" possibility of working with mom Cher and what he's learned about LGBTQ representation from trans youth.
One of my favorite parts of you starring in "American Horror Story: Cult" was reading your mom's tweets about the demonstrate.
You know, she gets confused a littl
Coming out for most of us is a complicated rite of passage, but for Chaz Bono, kid of superstar Cher and the late entertainer and Republican Congressman Sonny Bono, it was twice as hard — first as a lesbian and then as a transman.
To honor the recent National Coming Out Day, Bono was invited to speak at Penn State Abington. I was invited to interview Chaz by Jose Rodriguez, track coach and campus coordinator of intercultural affairs. Observant readers might call to mind that Jose’s track team nominated him for a Family Portrait a several years back.
PGN: So, inform me a little about yourself. Where were you born? CB: In Los Angeles. I was a very shy, very hushed , very good kid.
PGN: What did you like to do? CB: Hang out and play with my friends, ride bikes and skateboards. I loved to swim, too. Normal kid stuff. As kids, there isn’t much difference between genders, so I was able to carve out a space for myself with my guy friends and have a lovely happy existence. Kids are so much more unseal and uh, fair, with that kind of thing.
PGN: Were you more bookish or active? CB: No, I was definitely more active at that signal. I was a overdue reader. It was rigid for me so I preferre

The last image you might have of me is from about ten plus years ago when I was working as a gay and lesbian activist. At that time, I was also writing books (first Family Outing and next End of Innocence). Then I more or less disappeared.
In my first book, Family Outing, I described the events that led to a life-changing moment when I discovered that I was attracted to girls instead of boys, and drew
