BEGINNERS focuses on “Oliver” (Ewan McGregor), who is at the crossroads of his experience with the death of his mom “Georgia” (Mary Page Keller), and with his dad “Hal” (Christopher Plummer) revealing that he's gay. In a way, it's one depressing explode after another, especially when his mother's death seemed like a release for his dad to finally lead the remaining years of his life in as honest a fashion as possible. Oliver is also concerned about kind for his father in his twilight years, while at the same second he is falling for a French actress, “Anna” (Melanie Laurent), who also has issues of her own to contend with.

The role of Hal was intended for Max von Sydow, who declined due to the innateness of the subject in favor of appearing as a mute in EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY Shut. Plummer was attracted to the role because he liked the fact there was no self-pity regarding his character.

Oscar Winner Christopher Plummer on Straight Actors Playing Gay: "We All Do a Great Job"

Kevin Winter/Getty Images

"The sexual differences cancel each other out," Christopher Plummer, 82, explained to me backstage after nabbing the first Oscar of his life for playing a gay man.

I'd just asked Plummer if he felt Hollywood and the Academy liked showing support for gay roles, less so actors who are queer in real life.

Plummer was adamant:

"We all do a great job, gay and straight," Plummer said about straights taking on the often award-winning gay roles.

And the man who has now joined an illustrious list of heterosexuals winning Oscars for going male lover (Sean Penn for Milk, Tom Hanks for Philadelphia, Philip Seymour Hoffman for Capote) summed it up:

"All actors do our best," finished Plummer, who thinks no double standard exists.

Interesting thought. How many lgbtq+ Oscar winners are there?

In the plum acting category, that is?
