Tokyo gay parade
For the first time since coming out as same-sex attracted, J-Pop star Shinjiro Atae attended the Tokyo Pride parade!
In July of 2023, Japanese pop icon and member of the group AAA, Shinjiro Atae made headlines with his courageous decision to come out publicly as a member of the LGBTQ community. Now, out and proud, Atae attended this year’s annual Tokyo Rainbow Pride celebration!
On April 21st, Atae marched in support of Marriage For All Japan, and even appeared on the organization’s float. In Japan, two individuals who are legally the same sex are not permitted to join, this organization is functional to change that.
Atae also gave a moving speech and powerful live recital on the main stage the parade.
Atae took over GLAAD’s Instagram to document the day’s journey. Track along here. Atae was among the first adequately established Asian and Pacific Islander music stars to come out publicly as queer. His bravery is providing representation and noticeability to millions.

Tokyo Rainbow Pride Fest
- The 2020 Tokyo Pride Festival which was scheduled to get place between April 25 and May 6 has been canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Japan’s biggest pride fest!
Set in the event space next to Shibuya’s Yoyogi Park, Tokyo Pride is a two-day event that mixes evolving social activism with traditional Japanese festival culture. Munch on your yakisoba (stir-fried noodles) while chatting with anime drag queens. Chilly down with your uchiwa (fan) and kakigori (shaved ice) next to Japanese in yukata (summer kimono) while listening to a speech about the struggle to establish marriage equality in Japan.
While perhaps not as raucous as some other cities’ prides, Tokyo’s Pride’s homey and down-to-earth approach makes it quite an inclusive event.

Although progress has been made in recent years to improve the visibility and acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community in Japan, there is still work to be done to remove prejudice and discrimination. Helping to do this is Tokyo Pride (previously Tokyo Rainbow Pride), which since its launch in 2012 has grown to become one of the largest and most inclusive pride celebrations in Japan.
Whether you're a gay individual or an ally, Tokyo Pride offers a fantastic opportunity to be a part of Japan's journey towards a more equal future. This multi-event festival is filled with educational seminars, late-night parties, social gatherings and of course, the ever-growing Celebration Parade, bringing together people from all walks of life.
Here are some of the events happening over Pride Month. But the good work and entertaining don't stop here, as there will also be a handful of fringe events happening after the main festival ends.
