Is oscar from the office gay

Character: Oscar Martinez

From: The Office

Representation: Mexican, Gay

Their Importance: For a long time, Oscar Martinez was the only LGBTQ+ representation on television. Looking at reports from GLAAD, Oscar was:

  • 2006-2007: The only LGBT+ character of color on a regular series
  • 2007-2008: The only remaining gay character on a half-hour comedy program & the only LGBT+ lead/supporting character of color
  • 2009-2010: Oscar was one of 4 LGBT+ characters of hue who were series regular (and 1/5 in 2010-2011, and 1/6 in 2011-2012)

To have an LGBT+ ethics, particularly one of dye, is incredibly validating to see, especially when there weren’t many gay characters onscreen at the period. Even today, where there are arguably more LGBT+ characters on screen, they’re still overwhelmingly white, and it’s nice to watch that The Office had a well-written gay bloke of color on their show.

There’s definitely jokes about Oscar’s labels, but it’s not exclusive to him - there are jokes about on everybody (and oftentimes, they showcase how ignorant the person making the jokes is being) - and the exhibit doesn’t rely much on stereotypical or surface-level depic

Living… in Scranton, Pa., with his partner Gil. For a long time, his co-workers thought Gil was his roommate. Even when Oscar came out, Oscar’s boss Michael Scott couldn’t put two and two together, wondering aloud if his “roommate” Gil knew that Oscar was gay.

Profession… accountant at Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. He considers himself a part of the office’s “Coalition for Reason,” along with Jim and Pam. When things go too far off the rails, Oscar is usually the one to restore sanity and logic.  This often frustrates Michael, as Oscar demands clarity and the big picture while Michael typically has little access to either.

Interests… ice skating and yoga. There are also ideas that Oscar has an interest in politics, with off-hand comments and his Uncle Sam Halloween costumes suggesting he may be a Log Cabin Republican.

Relationship Status… happily taken by Gil. Oscar was hesitant to come out to his co-workers, but once Michael called him “faggy,” he figured it was time to say something. Still, he didn’t contemplate Michael would tell the whole office, and was initially mortified by the revelation. Now it’s enter as a great relief, and Gil can finally join Oscar at offic

Oscar Martinez

Oscar San Juan Martinez is a fictional character from the US mockumentary-style television series The Office played by Cuban actor Oscar Nunez.[3] Martinez was one of the few openly gay characters in broadcast television at the time that the series aired.[4]Although Nunez, who is straight, did not comprehend his character might be gay when he first signed on, he has no issues with the character's sexuality as prolonged as the material is funny.[5] For the 2006–2007 season, Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) reported he was the only LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) person of color character on a regular series.[6] For the 2007–2008 season he was the "only remaining gay ethics on a half-hour comedy program" and the only LGBT lead or supporting character who is a person of color.[7] For the 2009–2010 season, Martinez was one of four people of color LGBT regular series characters; in 2010–2011 there were six and in 2011–2012 there were five.[8][note 1]

Martinez is an accountant at the Scranton, Pennsylvania, office of the paper distribution company Dunder Mifflin and gets his first name from Núñez; series producer Greg Daniels f
