9 Nintendo Characters You Didn't Know Were LGBTQ+

Plenty of gamers have been celebrating Pride Month in their favorite games. Several games, from giant AAA experiences to indie projects, have included LGBT+ characters (and character creation options). While has been largely normalized in the industry now, that hasn't always been the case.

While Nintendo's history with upfront LGBT+ characters doesn't go as far back as some other companies, there's no doubt that big progress has been made. Fire Emblem: Three Houses was a major step forward for the publisher. Traditionally, though, Nintendo has kept its LGBT elements in the background, which makes it possible that players didn’t know some characters from their classic library are part of that community.

Birdo/Birdetta - Super Mario Bros. 2

Birdo has been appearing in Mario properties consistently since the 80s, but the business has been inconsistent with how it depicts its pink dinosaur. Her first appearance was in Super Mario Bros. 2, and the manual explained (with outdated wording) that the character is a transgender female that sometimes prefers the name "Birdette," though Birdo is stil

It’s well into Summer, not only does that mean warm skies and beach holidays, but it also means that it’s that time of year to celebrate Queer pride. As far as representation goes, Nintendo has been a mixed bag (or Adventure Pouch) of sorts.

Representation is important for communities like ours; validating our existence can move a long way. Today, I will explore some of the different ways Nintendo has provided some form of LGBTQ+ inclusion within its games and media. Though some of it is good, it is also essential to talk about the horrible to see what went wrong and potentially debate what could’ve improved.

Please notice that I originally started writing this article several years ago as a personal project.

Let’s begin with the series that really put Nintendo on the map: Super Mario. Birdo was originally introduced in 1988 as a boss in Super Mario Bros. 2. Not only is she transgender, but she very well may be one of the earliest examples of trans inclusion in gaming history. According to the official game manual:

“Birdo thinks he is a girl and likes to be called Birdetta. He likes to wear a bow on his head and shoot eggs from his mouth”

Possibly the best and most beloved Wii game was Mario Kart. A fave for all, a timeless classic, an iconic line-up of characters who (let’s face it) all acquire gay tendencies. Obviously don’t wanna put queens against each other but here are the Mario Kart Wii characters ranked in order of gay-ness.

P.S. Obviously have not included babies (because they need hour to grow and set up their identities) or skeletons.

16. Mario – He spends most of the series trying to rescue, Peach (a woman), only to be constantly friend-zoned. He is, however, an Italian plumber meaning he could probably have a moderately successful career in alternative industries if he was ever in need of funds.

15. King Boo – He’s dead so there isn’t really a lot to discuss in terms of gay-ness. He does wear a crown and haunts castles making him a flamboyant ghost who constantly tells the living extravagant stories about circuit parties of yesteryear.

14. Yoshi – He’s Mario’s optimal friend which automatically brings him down plus his popularity amongst tween girls makes him akin to today’s boyband stars. BUT, he does have a long tongue so…

I'm only posting the ones I find interesting. I was going to post this on the Gaming Board, but they are famous to be bigoted and anti-LGBTQIAP+. So, here it goes!

19. Mario

Mario is a cis, linear, white dude. I just remember when Mario teamed up with Bowser, Peach’s consistent kidnapper and abuser, in Super Mario RPG and Peach was enjoy, “WTF?” and Mario just shrugged. He plays golf and soccer and races karts with Bowser enjoy every weekend. Sounds appreciate a straight guy thing to do.

13. Koopa Troopa

Koopa Troopa is a trans guy who linked the military out of high school for lack of gainful employment options in the Mushroom Kingdom but was dishonorably discharged during Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.:(

8. Wario

Wario is a messy, sassy, playful polyamorous bottom. Though he works out constantly and is ripped (look at those arms!), he’s a sweetie who loves playing games and pranks and subverting masculine stereotypes. He’s actually really sensitive about being considered the villain all these
