Creta gay guide
Crete was one of our first vacations as a gay couple and although there isn’t a massive gay scene in Crete we felt very welcome on this beautiful island and have returned many times since!
Crete is the largest island in Greece offering everything from pretty soft sand beaches, to rich historical sights, a thriving nightlife scene and mountains inland to scout by car.
During our trips we had no issues being gay in Crete and felt particularly relaxed around the touristy areas. The most popular destinations in Crete for same-sex attracted travellers are typically Heraklion, Chania, Rethymnon, and Agios Nikolaos, as well as Malia (where there is a young party crowd).
Crete has thousands of visitors from all over the world every year and gay travel around Greece in general is very popular with the likes of Mykonos and Athens for example (although act check out the smaller islands like the stunning Ios!).
In our Gay Crete Travel Guide we possess put together the shortlist of the places we have stayed and visited, investigated what the male lover scene is like and put together some unmissable trips for your visit!

Experiencing Greek Food
Greek Mediterranean cuisine is also testament to the countrys long history, dating back to the Ancient Greeks who had a strong focus on olive oil, wheat, wine, and fish. The Byzantine era introduced new ingredients like meats, feta cheese, caviar, nutmeg, basil and lemons. The Ottoman Empire then contributed to the Greek cuisine, introducing staples like moussaka, tzatziki (yoghurt/cucumber/oil/mint dip), yuvarlakia (meatball/rice/lemon soup), keftethes (mince meatballs) and boureki (baked filled pastries).
Today, a traditional Greek meal will be at a taverna where you can order mezethes, many miniature plates of different specialties starting with olives, hummus, tahini, and tzatziki, and moving on to other starters like cheeses, keftethes, and dolmathes (stuffed vine leaves), before moving on to different meats or fish depending on which type of meze you pick.
The most popular wine in Greece is retsina, a white wine that has a distinct resin flavor. Greece also produces other fine wines, appreciate Athiri, Malagousia and Moscofilero. Another popular alcoholic beverage to look out for is raki, a transparent unsweetened, often anise-flavored and very stron
Say “Greece” to the travelling LGBT community and chances are most of them will think of Mykonos or Lesvos (aka Lesbos), but Crete — birthplace of Zeus, home to the Minoan civilization and the largest of the Greek islands — has much to offer the gay and lesbian traveller. Whether one’s interest is archaeology, lazing on the beach or seeing the sights, Crete impresses the visitor with its sheer size and variety of landscapes.
To put Crete in perspective: Mykonos, at approximately square kilometres, is about 50 percent bigger than Manhattan; Lesvos, at 1, square kilometres, is about half the size of Rhode Island. Crete, at more than 8, square kilometres, is 80 times bigger than Mykonos and bigger than the articulate of Delaware, but without so many people: its population is slightly more than , people, although it has several million olive trees and there are quite a limited goats.
What should be transparent from this is that Crete is a large island and you are not going to observe it all in one day. Indeed, I possess lived here for 10 years and came to Crete on holiday six times in the three years before that and I still haven’t seen everything.

Chania Gay Guide
Chania, the second largest city of Crete and the capital of the Chania region, is known for its gorgeous beaches with golden sand, its shopping markets, museums, tourist attractions, and amusement options! Even though the old town of Chania does not have the organised gay life that you would expect from a big city, it attracts many gay and lesbian visitors especially during the hot summer months.
The gay community of Crete prefer the cafe-bistros and cocktail bars since the island does not own any official gay venues. The pleasant promenades through the picturesque streets compensate the lack of them as they offer a very romantic atmosphere for the couples. All the eateries and bars are gay-friendly but be modest in front of locals. They do not nurture about your preferences but you will hear unpleasant comments if you operate in a way that is beyond the proper intimate behaviour. Visit La Brasserie in Heraklion and you will get the chance for a sensual atmosphere, flirting and dancing.
For a more idyllic scenery and chance of leisure, heading to one of the many secluded beaches with your partner will transport you much pleasure. Nudist
